Puka Nacua Apologizes for Antisemitic Gesture on Livestream

Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua has offered an apology following an incident on a December 16th livestream where he employed an antisemitic gesture. Nacua stated in his December 18th apology, "I was prompted during a recent social media livestream to enact a particular movement for a subsequent touchdown celebration. At the time, I was entirely unaware of the antisemitic connotations of this action and its perpetuation of damaging stereotypes against Jewish individuals. I sincerely regret any offense caused by my conduct, as I unequivocally oppose all forms of racism, prejudice, or animosity towards any community."
The National Football League issued its own statement on Thursday afternoon. "The NFL unequivocally denounces all manifestations of discrimination and offensive conduct targeting any group or individual," the league declared. "The escalating prevalence of antisemitism necessitates a global response, and the NFL remains committed to supporting our allies in this crucial endeavor. Hatred has no legitimate place within our sport or society at large."
This occurrence transpired when Nacua was a guest on a livestream hosted by internet personalities Adin Ross and N3on. Ross had specifically requested that Nacua perform a touchdown celebration incorporating the antisemitic trope. Nacua has faced significant criticism in the wake of his appearance.
U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell, a Democrat from California, expressed his dismay on Twitter, noting, "The Los Angeles Jewish community is understandably apprehensive following the Bondi Beach massacre. And what does this individual... do? He pledges an antisemitic touchdown dance for his Thursday night game. He needs to issue an apology or face repercussions."
During the same livestream, Nacua also voiced criticism of NFL officials, implying they harbored a desire for the spotlight. The Rams are currently in Seattle to compete against the Seahawks in a "Thursday Night Football" matchup.
