Volvo EX90: Revamping the Electric Flagship for Redemption

The Volvo EX90, initially envisioned as the vanguard of Volvo's all-electric ambition by 2030, stumbled out of the gate. Hampered by a confluence of factors, from a cooling EV market to policy shifts and, most critically, significant software issues, the flagship SUV fell short of expectations. However, Volvo is doubling down, delivering substantial updates to the EX90 in an effort to right the ship.
A core enhancement for the EX90 involves a new, centralized computer system. Powered by Nvidia's Drive AGX Orin, this unit streamlines various functions and paves the way for more sophisticated autonomous driving and AI capabilities. Demonstrating a commitment to existing customers, Volvo will offer a complimentary upgrade to this computer for all 2025 EX90 owners, aimed at addressing persistent software glitches.
Unfortunately for 2025 owners, a more fundamental upgrade will be exclusive to the 2026 model: a leap from a 400-volt to an 800-volt electrical architecture. This shift aligns the EX90 with the fastest-charging EVs currently available, allowing for significantly reduced charging times.
Independent testing revealed the 2025 EX90 took 36 minutes to charge from 5 to 80 percent, and a full hour to reach 100 percent. A mere 94 miles of range were added in 15 minutes. With the 800V system in the 2026 model, Volvo anticipates adding up to 150 miles of range in just 10 minutes.
Beyond charging improvements, the 2026 EX90 will incorporate several new features:
- An automatic emergency call function within the Emergency Stop Assist system, designed to bring the vehicle to a safe halt if the driver is unresponsive.
- Enhanced night performance for the automatic emergency steering system.
- Hands-free parallel parking.
The EX90 is equipped with the necessary hardware to achieve Level 4 autonomy, including a prominent lidar array. While Volvo has not yet provided a concrete timeline for unlocking this full self-driving capability, it remains a long-term goal.
Volvo's leadership acknowledges the shortcomings of the initial EX90 launch. With the 2026 updates, the company aims to regain customer trust and solidify its position in the rapidly evolving EV landscape. While the improved tech specs look good on paper, only time will tell if these changes fully restore the EX90's reputation and deliver on the promise of a truly exceptional electric SUV.
