BP Pulse Launches Massive EV Charging Hub Near LAX

BP Pulse, the electric vehicle charging division of the global energy giant BP, has opened a new flagship charging station near Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), marking a major expansion into the U.S. EV infrastructure market. This "Gigahub" is designed to serve a wide range of users—including individual travelers, rental car companies, and rideshare drivers—by providing convenient and dependable charging. Although strategically positioned near key transportation hubs, the stations remain accessible to all EV owners.
An Array of Charging Options
The LAX Gigahub offers an extensive selection of chargers. Situated next to the Intermodal Transportation Facility—a central hub connecting buses, light rail, taxis, rideshares, and private pick-up/drop-off zones via automated people mover—the station includes 24 charging towers supplying 48 plugs, all operable at the same time. This configuration allows two vehicles to charge per tower, dynamically distributing power based on each vehicle's charging capacity.
The facility is equipped with eight Alpitronic 400-kW ultra-fast chargers, each featuring two Tesla NACS plugs, allowing up to 16 vehicles to charge rapidly. Adapters are available for CCS-compatible vehicles. Another 16 Tritium 150-kW chargers, each with two CCS plugs, provide 32 additional charging points for those requiring less power or more time. All units are fitted with extended cables to accommodate any EV charging port location.
Pricing and Payment
Charging costs vary by time of use. During peak hours (2 PM to 10 PM), the rate is $0.60 per kWh, which is at the higher end of the public charging market. Off-peak hours offer a reduced rate of $0.40 per kWh. Payment can be made via the BP Pulse app or directly at the charging units using integrated credit card terminals.
Amenities and Access
In addition to charging, the Gigahub provides restrooms, a lounge with power outlets, vending machines, trash receptacles, and complimentary Wi-Fi. Currently, access to the lounge and restrooms is managed by an on-site attendant. Later this year, however, entry will transition to a code-based system available through the BP Pulse app.
The attendant is available from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, when the station anticipates highest usage. These hours may be adjusted, and the lounge is accessible only when staffed. Although security is provided 24/7 by a third-party contractor, they will not grant access to the lounge. Restroom availability is expected to increase—though not necessarily to 24 hours—once the app-based entry system is activated.
Bro Expansion Plans
BP Pulse is developing additional Gigahubs beyond airport locations, often selecting high-traffic sites near major highways. The company also maintains partnerships with TravelCenters of America (operating TA and Petro truck stops), as well as Arco and BP gas stations, each having the option to incorporate chargers under the BP Pulse network or their own branded offerings.
